SEEKING JESUS

We saw earlier that Jesus said, “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life” (John 6:27). Again, Jesus said in the Beatitudes, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

What you need to hunger for, what you need to thirst for, what you need to seek, is righteousness. You say, “Adrian, I thought you just said we need to seek Jesus.”

That’s right. You need to seek Jesus. But to seek Jesus is to seek righteousness, because Jesus is made unto us “wisdom, and righteousness” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Seek Jesus Preeminently

When Jesus told us to hunger and thirst after righteousness, that was another way of saying, “I am what you hunger for. I am the righteousness and the satisfaction your soul really needs.”

The word blessed means “joyful, happy, satisfied.” But Jesus did not say, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after blessedness.”

That’s what is wrong with the world today. Everybody wants to be blessed. The cry of our day is, “Bless me, Lord. Give me joy. Give me satisfaction.” But people who seek satisfaction and joy never find it.

Why? Because satisfaction and joy are by-products of a right relationship with Almighty God. Jesus said those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are those who will be truly happy.

The lack of satisfaction, the sense of unfulfilled desire that permeates our world, is only a symptom of a greater sickness, which is unrighteousness.

Suppose you have a fever and pain. You go to the doctor, who gives you something to deaden the pain and bring down the fever. That’s fine as far as it goes, but suppose the doctor never deals with the infection that is causing your fever and pain. That doctor is not practicing good medicine.

This is what many people today are trying to do spiritually. They simply want to deaden the pain of their unhappiness and misery rather than deal with the disease of unrighteousness that is causing the pain.

Let me say it again: what we need is the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to hunger and thirst after Him, and when we do that, we find blessedness.

You see, you will never need anything else spiritually besides Jesus. You should seek nothing more, and you should settle for nothing less—not a denomination, creed, church membership, or moral code.

You’ll never be satisfied until you have Jesus Christ in your heart. You cannot go beyond Jesus. You need to go beyond the miracles to Jesus, but there is nothing else beyond Him. You may go deeper into Jesus, but you’ll never go beyond Jesus. The Bible’s message is: believe in the miracles, but trust in Jesus.

Sometimes people ask me, “Adrian, have you received the second blessing?” I say yes, and then they say, “Well, tell me about it.”

I answer, “The second blessing is discovering what I got in the first blessing. And not only have I received the second blessing, but I’ve had the third blessing, which is discovering that I didn’t learn it all in the second one.
